| In the transantarctic mountains about 100 miles across the sound from McMurdo are the Dry Valleys. The valleys are mostly ice and snow free but contain brackish lakes and and unique ecosystems that are studied by many scientists. The bare rock offers interesting geology, fossils and even wood preserved from millions of years ago. The best known valleys are the Taylor Valley and the Wright Valley.
